What happens during a dental hygiene appointment?

Regular visits to the dentist are really important whether you are 5 or 50. If a disease or infection are already present your dentist and your dental hygienist will do their best to cure it, while protecting your oral health.

At Sheen Dental, we offer comprehensive dental hygiene services provided by our experienced and well-trained hygienist in Richmond. Different people have different needs when it comes to dental care, but we advise our patients to book appointments for dental check-ups and cleanings at least twice a year. This way, we can help you stay on top of your oral health.

Dental hygiene appointment

During your appointment, your hygienist in Richmond will examine your teeth carefully and compare their state of health to your last dental examination. If you are a new patient, we will need to get more information about you, including your oral health history. We may also ask for x-rays in order to assess the health of your jawbone. Your hygienist will then use their hands to examine your mouth, teeth, lips, throat and soft tissue and look for signs of disease, infection or oral cancer.

Once this stage is completed, your hygienist in Richmond will clean your teeth thoroughly with the help of special tools. If you are suffering from gum disease or there are large plaque deposits in your mouth, we may recommend a deep root cleaning for more effective results. Once plaque is removed from your teeth, we will polish them using a special paste. This will prevent plaque from sticking on their surface for some time.

Educating our patients

The role of your hygienist in Richmond doesn’t end in removing plaque from your teeth and gums. They are also responsible for educating you on proper oral hygiene through advice and demonstrations. If you don’t know how to brush or floss your teeth properly, your hygienist in Richmond will show the right techniques. Your hygienist will also give you advice on how to eat properly, which foods to eliminate from your diet and teach you on the effects of sugar on your teeth. Last but not least, your hygienist can offer advice on smoking cessation or other lifestyle choices that affect your teeth.
