The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Dental Implants

Over the last 30 years or so dental implants have come on in leaps and bounds and now it is changing the way that we look at replacing broken or missing teeth. However not only are people looking for better solutions to missing teeth, they’re also seeking to replace their existing dentures and bridges too. Let’s take a closer look at dental implants in all aspects and this includes the good, the bad and the downright ugly.

The Good

Ask any dental surgeon who deals in dental implants in Richmond, or anywhere else in the country, what the number one advantage to having a dental implant is, and they’ll tell you that if fitted properly and maintained, they can be a permanent solution. In other words a good set of dental implants can last you for the rest of your life. This is unlike any other form of tooth replacement which may have to be replaced within as little as 10 years.

In addition to this they look, act, and function just like your normal teeth. They have the ability to bring back a person’s smile and restore confidence. There’s also no special cleaning to adhere to. Instead just regular brushing and flossing will do the trick.

The Bad

One of the first things you may pick up on with regard to implants is that compared to other forms of tooth replacement, they’re expensive. In fact whether you’re looking at a procedure for a dental implant in Richmond, or indeed in Harley Street, expect to spend anywhere between £800 and £2500 per tooth. The reason for this is that the implant process can be quite a long one and not only is this, the elements in the implants themselves also expensive as they are made up of titanium, porcelain and various other precious metals. However if you take into consideration that you’ll have years of hassle-free teeth then it may well be an expense you are willing to swallow.

The Ugly

There have been many horror stories said about the surgical procedures surrounding implants. However, whilst it’s true that dental implant fitting can often be a long and complex procedure, sometimes taking up to 9 months to complete, the actual surgery part is relatively short. The good thing is that under normal circumstances, fitting the implant and the abutment are the only real surgical procedures and a good dental surgeon can often fit the first phase of an implant within two hours. Attaching the crown is more of a cosmetic procedure and doesn’t involve going under the knife. If a bone graft is needed prior to the implants being fitted, then clearly this involves more surgery, but a highly experienced surgeon would have undertaken this process hundreds of times.
