So just how long does a newly fitted dental implant last?
Many people are swayed by dental implants in Richmond, or indeed anywhere else in the country, because they’re of the understanding that they’ll last a lifetime. However this may be a slightly skewed view of the way that implants work.
The fact is that no dental implant dentist would be doing their job properly if they gave lifetime guarantees to dental implants and let’s face it, without the evidence to back it up, that statement is quite frankly hollow!
All that said, this is what we do know about implant longevity….
The very first ever patient (Gosta Laarson) had dental implants fitted in Gothenberg, Sweden way back in 1965. They were still going strong until his death in 2006 some 41 years later. Anything other than this and there are too many ‘what if’s’ to contend with to give an accurate timeline of longevity.
The other thing to remember is that the majority of implants have been placed within the last 15- 20 years and of course they (by this I mean both the patients and the implants) are still going strong therefore it’s hard to give an accurate forecast of overall longevity, simply because implants are still in their infancy.
Another point is that even if you’re fitted with the very best dental implant in Richmond and use a world renowned dental implant specialist, it doesn’t guarantee implant longevity. On the contrary, the chances of implant success or failure is largely down to you (the patient). Practice good standards of oral hygiene (eg, regular flossing and thorough brushing twice daily) coupled with ongoing visits to your dentist and there’s no reason why they can’t last for many years to come. Conversely, if you smoke, live a hedonistic lifestyle and don’t look after your oral health properly, then they might not even see their first or second birthday.
Here’s what we do at Sheen Dental to ensure that our implants survive for the longest time possible.
We have the right attitude
We admit that sometimes implants are going to fail and there’s nothing that we can do about it. That said, we do keep abreast of the latest evidence-based studies on what causes implant failure and what the best strategies for avoidance are. Therefore at the very least and like a good boy scout…we’re prepared!
We have a clear defined follow up procedure including:
Regular implant hygiene sessions and bi-annual x-ray inspections of the underlying area to spot any problems (if any) early.
We try to always give the patient the right information such as:
Patients who don’t manage to eradicate plaque from around the implant increase their risk of implant failure considerably. Also Peri-implantitis can lead to implant failure if not detected. Finally the problem of peri-implantitis is that it isn’t usually painful and therefore is very difficult to spot until it’s too late.
So there you have it, dental implant longevity! The bottom line is that if you keep your implants clean, lay off the cigarettes and and always attend dental appointments then you could be looking forward to a healthy and happy long life with your implants. If the opposite is true, then chances are you’re going to run into dental implant problems sooner than you might think.
