Preventing cavities in kids
At Sheen Dental, your dentist in SW14, our aim is to prevent cavities rather than treat them at a later date. We aim to give you ‘teeth for life’ and that goal starts as soon as your teeth start to come through. Yes, even your baby teeth because decay in baby teeth can affect the adult teeth that come through later.
One way we can help prevent decay in children’s teeth is with the application of dental sealants. This is a relatively new dental procedure and so you may be unaware of the benefits it can offer to your children.
As your dentist in SW14, we are have first-hand experience of just how much more prone to tooth decay children are. And one way, we can help prevent it is by offering preventive oral care to children and adults. Since children are more prone to tooth decay, we offer fluoride treatment and dental sealants. Both methods have been shown to prevent tooth decay and to also stop decay if it has not yet gotten as far as the centre of the tooth.
If you are interested in finding out more about dental sealants, our experienced dentists will be happy to answer specific questions about sealants, but we’d like to give you a basic understanding of its purpose and what it can do to protect your children’s teeth with this article.
How dental sealants work
When you bring your child in to see the dentist in SW14, we paint the tooth-coloured dental sealant (also known as fissure sealants) on to the ridges and grooves on the back teeth.
The dentist will clean the teeth thoroughly before painting the sealant on and hardening it with a special light. Denture sealants are a quick and non-invasive procedure that involve no pain at all.
The sealant acts as a protective barrier, keeping bacteria away from the dental enamel. If you combine the sealant treatment with a fluoride treatment and diligent brushing and flossing, it will help prevent cavities.
We recommend applying dental sealants as soon as permanent teeth appear, which occurs at different times for different children.
