Good Dental Hygiene – The Cornerstone of Overall General Health

Practising good dental hygiene is important especially after you’ve undergone treatment for dental implants in Richmond, but aside from keeping your mouth, fresh and healthy, it also plays a large part in your overall general health.

The mouth naturally contains bacteria, some good (such as those responsible for the balance of your intestinal flora), and some bad (staphylococcus and streptococcus) and research has discovered that an untreated inflammation in the mouth such as that found in gum disease can cause an accumulation of ‘bad’ bacteria which can in turn act as a catalyst for a whole host of other problems and issues. In fact it’s now thought that chronic illnesses such as clogged arteries, arthritis, heart problems and even cancer can all be exacerbated by, or stem from bacterial build-up or an untreated inflammation in the mouth.

What about the past?

Even going back to ancient civilisations, they recognised the importance of dealing with mouth  infections quickly. As an example, some 250 years BC, the Kematic Egyptians used an array of herbs and myrrh as a form of antiseptic for treating inflamed gums. The ancient Nubians who resided on the Nile river used to drink beer to eradicate oral infections. It was thought that the grains used to make the beer contained tetracycline, a natural antibiotic which helped to control the infection.

What about today?

Today’s biggest dental challenge isn’t tooth decay as fluoridated water and toothpastes are now commonplace. Instead it’s periodontal (gum) disease. Bleeding gums are a sure fire way of telling that you have the early stages of gum disease known as gingivitis, yet many people choose to ignore it in the hope that it will go away. The problem is that if it isn’t treated, the inflammation can turn into periodontitis and it’s this that can then set off a whole chain of events that may affect our overall health.

Now you can see why there’s far more emphasis placed on good oral health. Bacteria isn’t only problematic for a newly placed dental implant in Richmond, instead it can be a catalyst that causes a whole host of other health problems, and these are only the ones that we know about?
