Dental Implant Maintenance – Fixed Bridges versus Over Dentures

Dental implants are far more popular now and much more affordable than they were, say 10 years ago, but despite this fact many people still think that dental implants only have one use and that is to replace individual missing teeth. They couldn’t be more wrong. There are several different uses for dental implants. In Richmond, at Sheen Dental we use dental implants with fixed bridges to replace several missing teeth in a row, as well as implants to retain dentures (over dentures). So we thought we’d write a short post about the maintenance that is required for each option.

As mentioned above fixed bridges are used in cases where there are several missing teeth in a row and it would be inadvisable and very expensive to use a series of individual dental implants. They are connected to dental implants in much the same way as your real teeth are connected to roots and as such they require similar maintenance.

One of the most important factors of any type of successful dental implant is a regular daily cleaning routine being carried out at home. This includes brushing and flossing your fixed implant bridge to maintain a high standard of oral hygiene. In addition you’ll need to attend regular dental appointments so that the bite can be checked and X-rays taken to monitor your bone level.

Over dentures, or implant retained dentures as we tend to call them, are held in place by attachments or clips which are embedded into the underside of your denture. The clips are made from plastic and can and do wear out. If your denture begins to feel a little loose then you’ll know that the clips need replacing. This is a quick process which can be carried out at the clinic.

It’s also a case that the teeth on the over denture will eventually wear out whereas on a fixed bridge there will be little sign of wear or tear. This is mainly due to the fact that different materials are used in both cases. Porcelain teeth are generally the choice for fixed bridges and although they may chip they rarely need replacing.

Teeth on dentures are made from plastic and tend to wear out anywhere between 5-8 years. When they wear out they should be replaced. As a rule the entire over denture generally need to be replaced around every 10 years depending on your overall health and oral hygiene. So although they’re a great solution for patients who have trouble keeping their regular dentures in place they do need replacing over time.
